The Latarjet is a very successful procedure at restoring stability to the shoulder joint. In fact, historically, this surgery was used as a standard treatment for people with shoulder dislocations. As newer surgical techniques have improved, the Latarjet is now seldom used for a standard dislocation repair. In the Latarjet procedure, an incision is made over the front part of your shoulder and the coracoid bone is exposed. About 2cm of the bone is cut and moved to the front part of the shoulder in order to make a new shoulder socket.
Developed by a French surgeon in the 1950s, it is commonly performed when there is significant bone loss in the front of the glenoid (the shallow socket in the shoulder blade) from repeat dislocations. The Latarjet procedure is an orthopedic procedure in the shoulder where a coracoid bone block is positioned flush with the anterior-inferior border of the glenoid (often with one or more screws). It can be performed as either an open or arthroscopic procedure. It is usually performed for antero-inferior shoulder instability. Latarjet surgery, also known as a coracoid transfer, involves a bone graft and tendon transfer. During this procedure, Dr. Romeo makes a small incision on the front of your shoulder, then transfers a piece of bone from your shoulder blade to the front of your shoulder socket where your bone has worn away.

6. As in other joints, arthroscopy offers the postoperative advantages of less pain, earlier mobility, quicker rehabilitation and faster return to sports. 7. The number of episodes of dislocation before surgery does not affect postoperative instability rates and reoperation rates after the Latarjet procedure. However, patients with first-time dislocations had more postoperative pain compared with patients with recurrent dislocations before surgery. In the Latarjet procedure, an incision is made over the front part of your shoulder and the coracoid bone is exposed. About 2cm of the bone is cut and moved to the front part of the shoulder in order to make a new shoulder socket.
With almost every dislocation, there is some bone loss in the glenoid. This bone loss leaves a patient at greater risk of a repeat dislocation if they don’t have surgery to deal with the bone loss. The Bristow–Latarjet procedure has been one of the most recognized procedures for the treatment of recurrent shoulder dislocation with anterior glenoid bone loss, revision surgery after failed

HYPOTHESIS: The Latarjet procedure is safe when performed on an outpatient basis provided the patients are managed according to a specifically designed programme starting at the decision to undergo surgery and ending at the end of the early postoperative period. Latarjet surgery is a highly successful form of treatment for patients who experience recurrent shoulder dislocations. With almost every dislocation, there is some bone loss in the glenoid.
The great thing about the Latarjet procedure is the recovery is as quick or sometimes quicker than arthroscopic shoulder stabilisation surgery. Latarjet shoulder stabilisation surgery is performed under general anaesthetic as day surgery, meaning you will usually be operated on and released on the same day, but sometimes you may have to stay in overnight depending how you are doing. http://drmillett.com/ In this video, Colorado shoulder surgeon Dr. Peter Millett demonstrates a Latarjet procedure. Historically, this surgery was the standard treatment for people with shoulder dislocations. However, with the advent of arthroscopic surgical techniques, the Latarjet procedure is reserved for patients who have worn away at least 25% of their shoulder socket or present with multiple issues that require a multifaceted approach.
The Latarjet procedure is the most popular and highly effective, transferring the distal coracoid into the bony defect. 3 Surgical Technique A deltopectoral approach is used to expose the coracoid process.
